Locker Hooking

While Locker Hooking is certainly not as intricate, detailed, or exacting as so much of our fiber art world, there is a place for it in the fiber community as a way to use up tons of stash, wind up with a cushy, beautiful product, and experience the joy of almost instant gratification! (I'm especially fond of that last one.) Even ugly, scratchy fiber results in a beautiful, durable piece of art. (I have a rug that was made of really sad, rough fiber. It’s now one of my favorites - easily vacuumed and washed - very attractive and durable.) Artists can add to the basic instruction by incorporating strips of material, ribbons, etc., to reflect their own imaginations. The "instant gratification" thing. This is a fiber art that goes quickly - students can actually see their progress as opposed to the delicate, ultra-fine garments lots of us never seem to get finished.

Topics covered: Finding proper canvas, edge preparation, selecting the type and thickness of wool, working with my handspun/store bought yarns/rovings, cleaning techniques for the final product, and saving muscles and nerves (Learn to hook with both hands!), time consuming but lovely stitches to enhance the final look, and various tips to give an exciting fiber masterpiece.

Items included in the class are:
fiber, hook, binding, prepared canvas, and bound book.

Jogless Fibonacci Stripes:
Perfectly striped in-the-round with Italian mathematics

As many knitters know, the problem with working stripes in the round is the ‘jog’ that shows up each time you change colors. This class will teach you how to create flawless stripes without that dreaded jog. It’s a four-step process and the class practice swatch will become a cute baby hat – striped to perfection! As part of the class, we will talk about how to use Italian medieval mathematics – the Fibonacci sequence of numbers – to create pleasing, rhythmic stripes. Creating your own Fibonacci chart with colored pencils will reinforce the theory of rhythmic stripes and allow you to ‘swatch’ without actually knitting a single stitch.

Required skills:
Know how to knit in the round

Supplies students should bring to class:
Partial skeins of smooth worsted weight (4.5-5 stitches/inch) wool or cotton in 3-4 colors.
A 16 inch circular needle to match your yarn (or bring DP needles, two circulars, or one long circular needle if you prefer).
Two rubber ring markers in two different colors.
If you have colored pencils that match your yarn please bring them. If you don’t, I will bring many to share so don’t rush out and buy a set just for this class.

Homework:
With one of your colors, cast on 72 or 80 stitches on a 16 inch circular needle and join in the round. Work 8 rounds in 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing or in stockinette for 8-10 rounds for a rolled edge. Cut your yarn leaving a generous (6-8 inches) tail. Bring the piece to class on the needles.   Questions? Contact me at susanna@oneofsusannas.com

Introduction to Corespinning

Corespinning is a fun technique where you can create strong yarns with a stable core and beautiful, textured surface. In this class we will cover the basics of corespinning including selecting an appropriate core, methods to create a balanced corespun yarn, techniques for adding in "extras" such as sequins, beads, locks, etc., and fiber choices to create a more textured or smooth surface in your corespun yarns.

Required skills:
You need to be comfortable spinning singles (worsted style drafting) and plying at your wheel.

Supplies students should bring to class:
Please bring your spinning wheel with at least 2 empty bobbins and a lazy kate. To prepare the core, you will want your fastest ratio/smallest whorl (you will want this to go quick so we can get right to the good stuff.) For the corespinning itself, you will need your largest whorl/slowest ratio for your wheel. On my Lendrum, I use my fast flyer to prepare the core, and my jumbo flyer for the actual corespinning.

Optional Items:
Bring any "extras" you’d like to add to your corespun, such as strung beads or sequins, dangles, novelty yarns, silk flowers, locks, etc.

Class fee includes materials needed to create your first corespun - core yarn and a custom blended batt just for you, filled with luxury fibers such as alpaca, merino, silk, bamboo, wool locks, etc. Please specify your top 2-3 favorite colors and any fiber sensitivities with your registration so Taryn can prepare your luxury batt.

Two-thirds Sachet- A beaded, scented treasure to protect your woolens

This beautiful beaded sachet makes an ideal gift – for bridesmaids, as a mother’s day treat, or simply as a luscious gift to yourself. Learn to knit with beads and do an easy, great looking picot edging. A special stitch creates a fold line so your knitted piece folds over easily. Because the sides are knitted together, there is absolutely no seaming!

Fill the sachet with dried lavender or a favorite herbal moth mix, tie a ribbon around it and tuck it into your lingerie drawer. And don't forget to put one or two in with your winter woolens when you put them away in the spring.

Required skills:
Know how to knit garter stitch

Supplies students should bring to class:
One skein smooth, solid color DK/Sport weight yarn
Appropriate size needles. You will want to knit the sachet at a fairly tight tension to help the beads stay in place.
One tube Japanese seed beads, size 6 Look for high quality Japanese seed beads; pre-strung Czech beads in hanks do not work well with yarn. NOTE: make sure that a double strand of your yarn fits through the holes of your beads.

A "big eye" beading needle This thin, rigid needle with a large opening in the middle will help you string your beads quickly and easily. If you have problems finding this needle, you can buy one from me on the day of the class.
Two rubber ring markers.
Usual knitting supplies including scissors, stitch markers, tape measure, etc.

Homework:
Cast on 20 stitches and work in garter stitch for 1-2 inches. Adjust your needles until you achieve a gauge of approximately 6½ stitches per inch. Bring your swatch to class but do not cut your yarn.  If you have questions about the supplies or homework, please contact me at susanna@oneofsusannas.com

Fashion, Fit, Form & Function –Designing Garments for Everyone
Knit and/or Crochet

There are a million patterns in the naked city… yeah… a million… and wouldn’t it be nice if just ONE of them fit?!?  Well, my friend, the search is OVER! We will teach you the basics of fit, form and function that we use daily as fashion designers so you can see a garment and make it for yourself… or someone else. You will create a template that you will be able to use for every garment you ever want to make… EVER… did we mention the ever part? No matter whom you are making for, no matter what the body type, you will be able to create a garment that anyone would be thrilled to wear.

We will start with measurements and form –what measurements do I take from where and how do I apply them to my template? Then we’ll talk about fit –how do I make a garment that fits a certain style or body type? Then we’ll move to function –whom am I making this for and where will they wear it? Finally… fabrics –how to take your swatch and convert that into a pattern.

Supplies students should bring to class:
Soft (non-metal) measuring tape
Notebook
Pencil
Calculator (optional)

Goals
  • Be able to take proper measurements and be able to make adjustments to those measurements according to body type.
  • Understand proper fit as it applies to different body types and styles of garments.
  • Understand the basics of hand knit/crochet fabrics and where/when/how to use them.
  • Understand basic math behind going from swatch to pattern.
  • Leave with a template and measurement guide so you can create any garment
