Meet our Fiber Arts Judge...
Nancy Bjerke
Nancy Bjerke has enjoyed a lifelong interest in the fiber arts.  Early recollections of fiber activities include embroidery and crewel work with her Grandma, and hand stitching a drawstring fringe bag at 9 years of age.  Middle school and high school years were full of sewing, sewing clothes to wear to school every day.  In college (late 1970’s), Nancy studied tapestry weaving, and other art design classes.   Spinning came in the late 1980’s, and it was spinning that solidified her true love for all things to do with fiber, especially making yarn.  Nancy didn’t learn to knit till 8 years later, when she realized that she needed to do something with all that hand-spun yarn.

Currently, Nancy continues to spin (everyday), weave tapestry on her walking loom, and smaller tapestry looms.  Knitting projects are always on the needles, two or three going at the same time.  Sewing is beginning to pop back into her life, putting together jackets, vests from handwoven fulled fabric.  Currently she is part of a textile conservation team at Western Washington University, restoring and hanging Alexander Caldwell’s 13 tapestries that were created in the mid 1970’s. In the future Nancy has plans to begin teaching again, continue with conservation work, judging, as well as create fiber art.

Nancy is a certified judge for the state and regional fairs, for handspinning, knitting, weaving, felting, and crochet.  In 1999 she studied with Marie Gettman, “Handspinning Standards”.  Judging experience includes The Evergreen State Fair (August 2000 and 2001), Alpacapalooza (April 2000 and 2001), San Juan County Fair (August 2010 and 2011).  Nancy is known for  consistency, fair, objective judging, as well as encouraging the entrant to continue to explore and learn more about their craft.
