Class Description: What happens when you change one factor in your spinning? Truly understanding our spinning through a series of experiments is the focus of this class. Since reflection is the key to truly learning, we'll document the results of these experiments; we'll share with each other our knowledge, questions, and discoveries. We'll begin with re-affirming our general understanding of the broad range of fibers and the process of spinning; we'll quickly move on to spinning. Our experiments will include making small changes in preparation, drafting, posture, tension, and treadling; we'll analyze the effect on singles and plied yarn with a variety of wools. We'll use tools and reflection to measure our comfort, "hand," angle of twist, wraps per inch, twist per inch, and grist.
Required Skills: must be able to spin a continuous singles yarn (doesn’t have to be perfect).
Students Should Bring to Class: A working spinning wheel with all its parts; hand cards; extra bobbins & a Lazy Kate; labels; a jumbo orifice might be useful but is not required.
Supplies Provided by Instructor: Use of tools in class, top and small batts in a variety of wool breeds, and detailed handouts.
