Class Description: Silk qualities are pretty terrific: high luster, lovely drape, smooth hand - an overall sense of luxury. The focus of this class is learning about silk alternatives such as lotus, milk, bamboo, Tencel, and soybean. Participants will first examine several types and forms of silks (tussah, mulberry, muga, eri, sari, and peduncle; silk top, noil, and caps) and then will have time to combine and spin silk alternatives with a variety of wools.
Required Skills: Participants must be able to spin singles confidently. Spinning these fibers is generally not “newbie-friendly”, although in combination with wools, they are easier to spin than alone.
Students Should Bring to Class: A working spinning wheel with all its parts; hand cards; extra bobbins and Lazy Kate; labels; blending boards optional
Supplies Provided by Instructor: Samples of a variety of silks for examination; silk alternatives for spinning (including lotus and Tencel, along with others); handouts
