Class Description: Long draw spinning is one of the mainstays in spinning several different types of fiber. Being able to magically draw out the fiber and let the twist roll up creates yarn faster than other spinning methods. It’s also a lot of fun watching that long draw of fiber effortlessly transform into a solid yarn structure. Spinning cotton as a long draw is easier than other methods allowing you to draw out any slubs easily as you spin. Another aspect of long draw is you can use/make rolags (or punies if it is cotton), which provides a great vehicle for fiber to yarn. Long draw can be unsupported or supported and it is a mainstay of production spinners. Chain plying is a popular method for plying yarn as it allows strong color patches to stay together versus standard 2-plying a variegated yarn. Chain plying also lets you spin those singles bobbins you have accumulated into a three-ply yarn. It is easy to learn and is very relaxing, quickly plying your yarn.
This class will show you how to do long draw along with several methods which you can choose from. We all learn differently so you will have the option of spinning with one hand or using both hands in the long draw process. For the Chain plying, bring one full bobbin of singles and from this you will create a 3-ply yarn. Using a variegated spun singles will demonstrate how the color comes together in the plied yarn. Adding these two tools to your spinning toolbox will increase your overall spinning skills and provide you two more ways to spin.
Required Skills: Be comfortable spinning a singles yarn, have a spinning wheel in good working condition. Does not have to be perfect yarn. You should have an understanding of how your wheel works.
Students Should Bring to Class: Bring spinning wheel in working condition, several extra bobbins, a bobbin filled with a single yarn for the plying, extra drive band, oil, niddy noddy if you have one, scissors, paper and pencil, and normal spinning accoutrements. Bring at least ONE FULL BOBBIN OF SINGLES for chain plying . NOTE: If you have an electric wheel, bring your battery as the electrical outlets are limited.
Supplies Provided by Instructor: Instructors provide fibers: 2 oz Wool, 1½ oz Silk, and 1 oz Cotton.
