Class Description: Shetlands can produce amazing, lovely wool in eleven naturally occurring colors (and they come in over 60 color and marking combinations!). Working from clean fleece and prepared samples, we will explore the Shetland fleece including both roo’d and sheared wool samples as well as across a number commercially prepared natural colors. We will discuss what tools are helpful—and how to use them— to achieve your goals when working with Shetland wool. Students will receive a breed study folder to hold their samples and notes as well as over 8 oz of Shetland wool to spin, ensuring that students have enough fiber to finish a project.
Required Skills: Students should be able to spin a continuous thread on either a wheel or spindle
Students Should Bring to Class: A spinning wheel or spindle that the student is comfortable with and whatever tools they need to create plied samples. 3 bobbins, a lazy kate and niddy noddy are recommended. Students who have hand cards or flick carders are welcome to bring them. There will be a limited number of tools available in the class for students who want to explore their use.
Supplies Provided by Instructor: A folder for breed information and personal notes/samples, fleece samples to experience the difference between rooing and shearing, ready to spin fiber samples
