Description: Are you spinning all types of fiber with the same technique? This class will help you get out of your comfort zone and into a new dimension. Long staple Silk and short staple Cotton offer an opportunity to match technique to fiber in the world of hand spinning providing new opportunities to work with the fiber and not forcing the fiber to your comfort zone. We will work with short staple cotton as it comes from the cotton gin along with a sample cotton puni and demonstrate how to make punis. In addition, you will learn about and work with silk noil which is the short fibers removed during the combing process, silk hankies made by spreading a cocoon over a wooden frame, and sliver which is the first process of carding the silk. Staple length, degree of twist and plying options will also be covered.

Required Skills:  Are comfortable spinning a singles yarn, does not have to be perfect yarn, have spinning wheel in good working condition. You should have an understanding of how your wheel works.

Students Should Bring to Class:  You should bring a small amount of hand cream to use before spinning silk. It keeps the silk from catching on your hands. Bring spinning wheel in working condition, several extra bobbins, extra drive band, oil, niddy noddy if you have one, scissors, paper and pencil, and normal spinning accoutrements.

Supplies Provided by Instructor:  Teachers will provide sufficient fiber for spinning, including silk noil, cotton, a cotton puni, silk sliver, and silk hankies.
