Description: Spinning Flax can be traced back to 3000 BC in Egypt and it is still being spun today. Wet line flax spinning is fun to learn and is a very sturdy fiber. Used in many fine linens, it is strong and beautiful. This class will take you through the process of getting your flax ready to be put on the distaff, ways to spin, and covers the process of making flax spinnable and the different ways the flax fiber is processed. You will get a half strick of flax fiber and a complete handout which covers the spinning process along with details of other ways of spinning flax.
Required Skills: Students should have a wheel in good working condition and be able to spin a consistent single.
Students Should Bring to Class: Students should bring a wheel in good working condition. If you have a distaff bring that. If you do not have one you have a couple of options. Coat racks that are sturdy work well and can be found on-line for as little as $20 or less. I have one that comes completely apart for easy storage; a broom will work; a dowel that is about an inch wide and 50" long plus a belt which will go around your waist so the dowel can be held in one spot, or you can use a towel which we will wrap the fiber in to put on your lap. Also bring 6 yards of any color ribbon to wrap the strick with. Bring spare parts (ex: drive band), oil, scissors, extra bobbins, paper and pencil, and any other accoutrements you would normally bring.
Supplies Provided by Instructor: I will provide a half of a strick, water bowel, water and sponge
