Description: This class is a workshop on variations of finger manipulated lace weaves such as

Lenos, Brooks Bouquet, Spanish Lace, and Danish Medallion. Class participants will work on their own looms with an opportunity to collaborate with other students. This is a self-paced class with students open to pick and choose which techniques they wish to concentrate on.

Required Skills: ability to warp a rigid heddle, table, or floor loom

Students Should Bring to Class:

  • rigid heddle, 4 harness table or floor loom, dressed and ready to weave
  • warp: 3/2, 5/2 (recommended), or 8/2 cotton (a light color preferred- do not use black or navy)
  • weft same yarn as used for warp
  • warp should measure a minimum of 10 inches weaving width on the loom and a minimum of 2 yards
  • sett appropriate for plain weave
  • thread warp for plain weave
  • a supplementary yarn to use for making Danish Medallions and Spanish Lace (* see notes below for specifics)
  • at least two stick shuttles and/or a boat shuttle with bobbin
  • pick-up stick or weaving sword
  • medium size crochet hook
  • scissors
  • pencil and paper to take notes
  • anything else that helps you with your weaving such as reading glasses and a small light

optional materials

  • bobbins winder if available, if not we should be able to share with other class members
  • tapestry needle

* Supplementary weft that is a different color and shows good contrast to the warp yarn. This yarn should be approximately twice as big as the warp yarn. This can be any yarn doubled, a single larger yarn, or a cord.

* It is best to use a weaving yarn to show the lace structure. I would advise against using mohair, novelty yarns, and knitting yarns.

Homework: Student will need to warp a rigid heddle, table or floor loom to plain weave prior to class.

Supplies Provided by Instructor: a color, spiral bound instruction booklet, illustrated with diagrams and pictures
